Applicants sought for the 2018/19 David Mayes Scholarship

The University of Edinburgh is inviting applications for the David Mayes Scholarship for the 2018-2019 academic year. The scholarship will be awarded to one full-time postgraduate student within the School of Engineering who is undertaking research in the field of integrated circuit design at the University of Edinburgh. Research projects should not be weapons-related in accordance with David Mayes’ belief that IC research should promote, protect and enhance life.

The value of the award is £3,200 to be spent on advancing the successful candidate’s research, for example by attending a conference, visiting a research facility, funding proof-of-concept experiment(s), etc.

Scholarship applications will be anonymously assessed by a panel of academics. A candidate’s application should consist of a short personal statement (of no more than 300 words) detailing their PhD research, their intentions for the scholarship should they receive the award, and how such an award would benefit their research.

The previous recipient of the scholarship, Anthony Bulling of the Institute for Integrated Micro and Nano Systems, used the award to help fund a six-month European research visit to the Organization for Nuclear Research, CERN, in Geneva, Switzerland.

"To be awarded the 2017/18 Mayes Scholarship was a real honour for me and was highly appreciated. The scholarship was invaluable and added substantial value towards my research, and helped directly in facilitating an internship project both at CERN (the Organization for Nuclear Research) in Geneva, Switzerland, and ELSA (the Electron Stretcher Accelerator), in Bonn, Germany"
Anthony Bulling

Anthony’s project involves the characterisation of single photon avalanche diodes for ionising radiation detection. The hope is for a new generation of miniature (table-top) charged-particle accelerators, and the widespread deployment of charged-particle beams and detectors for use in medical diagnosis and treatment (such as x-ray imaging and electron therapy).

"The award has also helped advance my future publications and has accelerated the pathway to impact. Furthermore, it has helped me to establish a global network of fellow researchers and has provided a broader platform for future collaboration"
Anthony Bulling

Applicants should email their submissions to jon.terry@ed.ac.uk before 16:00 on Friday, 31st May 2019.
